The Yoruba Youth Council has denounced the planned protest against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, organized by the #ReformINEC and #SackYakubu Movement. Scheduled to take place in Abuja on December 5, 2024, the protest has been described by the Council as unnecessary and detrimental to national unity and progress.
In a statement, the Council criticized the motives behind the protest, labeling the organizers as individuals intent on exploiting perceived public dissatisfaction for personal and divisive ends. It highlighted the advancements achieved under Prof Yakubu’s leadership, noting that his reforms have bolstered the credibility and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral process.
The Yoruba Youth Council further alleged that the protest seeks to undermine the administration of President Nola Ahmed Tinubu, whose government has been focused on driving economic transformation. It reaffirmed its support for both the president and Prof Yakubu, emphasizing that such protests threaten to derail the progress being made at both institutional and national levels.
Calling on security agencies to act decisively, the Council urged them to prevent any disruptions to the nation’s peace and stability. It also appealed to Nigerians to reject divisive elements and to support efforts that promote unity and democratic growth.
The Council concluded by reiterating its commitment to defending Nigeria’s progress and applauded Prof Yakubu’s contributions to the electoral system, which have received global recognition. It called for collective vigilance against actions aimed at destabilizing the country.
